The Australian Parent Visa program allows the parent of a settled Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident or eligible New Zealand Citizen to live in Australia either temporarily or permanently.
Olympus Migration assists in 5 different Subclasses and Pathways, which cover both Temporary Parent Visas (SC 870, SC 173 & SC 884) and Permanent Parent Visas (SC 143, SC 864). You can read about most of these on this page.
The Parent Visa program is very complex with many different pathways and eligibility criteria, so we recommend that you book a complimentary consultation with Andreas Athanasiou by scrolling to the Booking section at the bottom of this page.
You can have everything explained to you so you can make the right decision and not apply for the wrong subclass, which would cost you money, time and the opportunity to re-apply immediately, in some cases.
Pathway 1 (Temporary Visa)
The Sponsored Parent Visa (Temporary) (Subclass 870) lets a Parent of an Australian Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or eligible New Zealand Citizen visit Australia for up to 3 or 5 years. This can be re-applied for in the future, for up to a maximum period of 10 years.
Eligibility of the Sponsor (Child)
The Sponsor must:
• Be an Australian Citizen, an Australian Permanent Resident or an eligible New Zealand Citizen.
• Be over 18 years old.
• Be the Child of the Applicant or be the Spouse of the Child of the Applicant.
• Have been lawful in Australia over the past 4 years.
• Pass the Income Test - most recently completed Taxable Income Year must be $83,454.80 or more (can combine with Spouse or another Child of the Parent).
• Meet the Character Requirements.
• Be able to meet the Sponsorship obligations.
Once the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) approves the Sponsorship, the Parent can then apply for the Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870).
The DHA's Cost of the Sponsorship is $420.
Eligibility of the Applicant (Parent)
The Applicant must:
• Be at least 18 years old.
• Be overseas.
• Have an approved Sponsorship by the Sponsor.
• Have met previous Visa obligations.
• Have enough money (or access to enough money) whilst in Australia.
• Meet the Health Requirements.
• Meet the Character Requirements.
• Have the right Health Insurance.
• Have a genuine intention to stay in Australia temporarily.
The DHA Cost for the 3-year Sponsored Parent Visa (Temporary) (Subclass 870) is $5,895.
(Note: Upfront $1,180 - and the rest before Visa grant).
The DHA Cost for the 5-year Sponsored Parent Visa (Temporary) (Subclass 870) is $11,785. (Upfront $1,180 - and the rest before Visa grant).
Overview of the Income Test
The Sponsor must pass the Income Test.
To pass the Income Test, the Sponsor's taxable income for the most recent completed taxable income year prior to the date of lodgement of the sponsorship application, must be at least equal to, or greater than $83,454.80.
If the Sponsor can't pass the income test themselves, they can combine their taxable income with their Partner/Spouse and/or another Child of the Applicant (Parent) who is also an Australian Citizen, Australian Permanent Resident or eligible New Zealand Citizen.
If combining income with another person, the Sponsor's taxable income must be at least 50% of the taxable income amount specified above to pass the income test (which is $41,727.40).
Processing Times & Decision
The times vary from case to case. The DHA’s indication is between 2 months and 4 months for a decision on each stage, separately. However, this changes on a monthly basis. Nothing can ever be guaranteed in this industry; however, decision-ready Parent Visa applications usually get faster decisions.
If the Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870) is granted, the Parent can enter Australia for 3 or 5 years. They can re-apply once the Visa has expired (with some conditions).
The abovementioned criteria are the bare minimum. More information will need to be provided by both the Applicant and the Sponsor to confirm eligibility. The DHA makes frequent legislative changes in relation to Visa criteria and eligibility; in some instances, without any prior notice.

Our promise to you: Our firm has an 100% success record with Parent Visas. However, in the unlikely event that an application is refused, we will re-apply with no additional professional fees paid to Olympus Migration.
If the Sponsor (the Child) is an eligible New Zealand Citizen, then they can Sponsor their Parent for any of the Parent Visas. Visit our NZ Portal to find out more about the eligibility criteria.
An Assurance of Support (AoS) assures the DHA that the Parent will not have to rely on Government Assistance after the grant of any Permanent Parent Visas. Visit Services Australia for eligibility.
Immediate compassionate assistance can be provided for complex issues, such as No Further Stay Condition Waivers, Status Resolutions for Unlawful Immigrants, Health Waivers and more.
We also provide assistance for the other two Parent Visas, which are as follows:
Keep in mind that the current processing times for a decision in these subclasses are approximately 30-40 years at the moment.
We are able to further discuss these options with you in a complimentary consultation with us.
Yes. However, the DHA continues to process Parent visa applications and is taking disruptions arising from the COVID-19 Pandemic into account when considering Visa applications.
The DHA has a page dedicated the Parent Visa Processing Times which is updated frequently. You can visit that page using this link.
The Sponsor (the Child of the Applicant) must agree that:
If the Sponsor doesn't comply with the Sponsorship Obligations, the DHA may cancel the Sponsorship and/or the Parent Visa.
It depends on which Visa they have applied for.
Usually, they are eligible for a Bridging Visa in the following two scenarios (which we offer):
The balance of family test measures a Parent visa Applicant's family links to Australia.
The test determines the extent of the Parent's links to their children or stepchildren in Australia and ensures only those with close ties to Australia are eligible for a Parent Visa.
A parent meets the Balance of Family Test if they meet one of the following:
The DHA will not waive this test, even in compelling or exceptional circumstances.
The Balance of Family Test is not relevant to the Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 870).
An Assurance of Support (AoS) assures the DHA that the Parent will not have to rely on government assistance after the Grant of a Permanent Parent Visa.
It is a legal agreement the Sponsor makes with Services Australia; ultimately, it is a promise that the Sponsor will pay Services Australia back for any income support they provide the Applicant/Sponsor.
The DHA will request this after lodgement of the Permanent Parent Visa.
The two Permanent Visas (143 & 864) that we offer require an AoS.
The Temporary Visas (870, 173 & 884) do not require an AoS.
More information can be found on the Services Australia website via this link.
Applicants must be of good character to visit or live in Australia. This means you must pass the character test, and remain of good character.
The character requirements are set out under section 501 of the Migration Act 1958. The DHA refers to this section to decide if you are of good character.
You must always disclose all of your criminal history when applying for a Visa.
If you fail to disclose anything that may be on your record, and your application is approved, the DHA may cancel this Visa or any future Visas when they find out.
The Sponsor's Criminal History may be relevant, depending on the circumstances. Your appointed representative can confirm this with you.
Australia enjoys some of the best health standards in the world. To maintain these standards, most Visa Applicants must meet the minimum health standards before the DHA will grant them a visa.
Your appointed representative will confirm with you whether you (and any secondary applicants) will need to undertake a Health Examination, and can provide you with your DHA-issued reference, which is called a HAP ID.
If you are in Australia, it is likely you will need to undertake a Health Examination with Bupa Medical Visa Services.
If you are overseas, the DHA has a list of approved Panel Physicians or Clinics you must visit.
No. It is not currently possible to apply for any of the following visas (that we assist with) whilst holding a Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870):
The Sponsor (Child) must pass the Income Test.
If combining income, the Sponsor's taxable income must be at least 50% of the taxable income amount specified above to pass the income test (which is $41,727.40).
If the Sponsor cannot pass the Income Test, they will be unable to sponsor their Parent for this Visa subclass.
