Australian Citizenship (by Conferral)
This pathway is for current Australian Permanent Residents who meet the general residency requirements and other eligibility criteria.
The process varies depending on the applicant’s age and personal circumstances, and in most cases, applicants are required to sit and pass the Australian Citizenship Test.
Australian Citizenship (by Descent)
This option applies to individuals born outside Australia who have at least one parent who was an Australian citizen at the time of their birth.
Applicants under this category are not required to sit the Citizenship Test, but must still meet character requirements and provide verifiable evidence of their descent, which may include historical or decades-old documents.
Australian Citizenship (by Birth)
A child born in Australia is automatically an Australian citizen if at least one parent was an Australian citizen or permanent resident at the time of birth.
In addition, individuals born in Australia who have lived here continuously for the first 10 years of their life may also be eligible for automatic citizenship, regardless of their parents’ visa status.
Australian Citizenship (for Citizens of New Zealand)
New Zealand citizens living in Australia may be eligible for citizenship by conferral if they meet the relevant requirements.
Eligibility may apply to those who were in Australia on 26 February 2001, or through the new direct citizenship pathway introduced for eligible New Zealand citizens.
Resident Return Visa (Subclass 155/157)
This visa is for current Australian permanent residents who no longer have valid travel authority on their permanent visa.
As most permanent visas include a five-year travel facility, holders must apply for a Resident Return Visa to regain the right to re-enter Australia as a permanent resident if the travel validity has expired.
