Portal for Australian Parent Visas
The Australian Parent Visa program allows the parent of a settled Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia, either on a temporary basis or permanently, depending on the chosen visa pathway.
Olympus Migration assists with five primary Parent Visa subclasses, covering both Temporary Parent Visas (Subclass 870, Subclass 173 and Subclass 884) and Permanent Parent Visas (Subclass 143 and Subclass 864).
We also assist with the remaining Permanent Parent Visas (Subclass 103 and Subclass 804), which may be available to certain applicants depending on their eligibility and long-term migration goals.
Given the complexity of the Partner Visa process and the numerous eligibility requirements involved, we recommend booking a complimentary consultation with Andreas Athanasiou to discuss your specific circumstances and pathway options.
Pathway 1: Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870)
This Temporary Visa allows a parent of an Australian citizen or Australian permanent resident to reside temporarily in Australia for 3 or 5 years, with the option to reapply for a maximum stay of up to 10 years.
The parent must be overseas when they apply for this Temporary Visa.
Eligibility of Sponsor
To sponsor a parent for the Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870), the sponsor (child) must:
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be the biological, adoptive or step-child of the applicant, or the spouse/de facto partner of the child.
- Have lawfully resided in Australia for the past four years.
- Pass the Income Test, with a taxable income of at least $83,454.80 in the most recently completed financial year (this income may be combined with a spouse or another eligible child of the parent).
- Meet the character requirements.
- Be willing and able to comply with all sponsorship obligations.
If the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) approves the sponsorship, the parent may then apply for the Subclass 870 visa. The DHA Sponsorship Application Fee is AUD $420.
Eligibility of Applicant
To be eligible to apply for the Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870), the applicant (parent) must:
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be the biological, adoptive or step-parent of the sponsor.
- Be outside Australia at the time of application.
- Have an approved sponsorship from their eligible child (the Sponsor).
- Have complied with all previous visa conditions.
- Have sufficient financial means to support themselves while in Australia.
- Meet the health and character requirements.
- Hold adequate health insurance for the duration of their stay.
- Intend to stay in Australia temporarily on a genuine basis.
The DHA Visa Application Fee is AUD $6,070 for the 3-Year Visa and AUD $12,140 for the 5-Year Visa.
The Upfront cost is $1,215 and the remaining must be paid before the Visa is granted.
Income Test
To be eligible to sponsor a parent under the Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870), the sponsor must meet the Income Test.
The sponsor must have a taxable income of at least $83,454.80 for the most recently completed financial year prior to lodging the sponsorship application.
E.g., if the application is being lodged in early 2026, the sponsor must provide their FY2025 Taxable Income Statement.
If the sponsor does not meet the income requirement individually, they may combine their taxable income with one or both of the following:
- Their spouse or de facto partner.
- Another child of the applicant (parent) who is an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
If income is being combined, the sponsor must personally earn at least 50% of the required amount, which is $41,727.40.
Please note: The criteria listed above represent the minimum requirements only. Additional documentation and evidence may be required from both the Applicant and the Sponsor to confirm full eligibility.
The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) regularly updates visa legislation and eligibility requirements, often without prior notice. Additionally, processing times for Parent Visas can vary significantly depending on the visa subclass, individual circumstances, and current DHA priorities. In some cases, published processing times may extend to many years or even several decades.
For the most accurate and up-to-date assessment of your eligibility and expected processing time, we recommend contacting our office to schedule a complimentary consultation. Our team will provide tailored advice based on your personal circumstances and the latest DHA guidelines. During your consultation, we will provide a fixed professional fee quote should you choose to appoint our services, as pricing may vary depending on your individual circumstances. To help reduce financial pressure, Olympus Migration offers flexible payment plans, allowing professional fees to be paid in instalments over a period of up to 15 months.
Pathway 2: Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 173 + 143)
A two-stage pathway that enables a parent to live in Australia for 2 years on a Temporary Visa (Subclass 173), followed by a Permanent Visa (Subclass 143).
The parent must be overseas when they apply for the Temporary Visa, and can be in Australia when they apply for the Permanent Visa.
Eligibility of Sponsor (Stage 1)
To sponsor a parent for the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 173), the sponsor (child) must:
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Be the biological, adoptive or step-child of the applicant, or the spouse/de facto partner of the child.
- Be Settled in Australia (lived in Australia for a reasonable period - usually at least 2 years).
- Meet the character requirements.
- Be willing and able to comply with all sponsorship obligations.
Eligibility of Applicant (Stage 1)
To be eligible to apply for the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 173), the applicant (parent) must:
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have an approved Sponsorship by the applicant's Child.
- Have met previous Visa obligations.
- Meet the Balance-of-Family Test.
- Meet the Health Requirements.
- Meet the Character Requirements.
- Must not currently hold and must not be currently applying for a Sponsored Parent Visa (Subclass 870).
More Information (Stage 1)
The total DHA fee for the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 173) is $32,525.
- Initial Payment (at lodgement): $3,395.
- Remaining balance: Payable before visa grant.
Additional family members included in the application will incur extra DHA fees.
If the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 173) is granted, the parent may live in Australia for two years with full work and study rights. Before it expires, they may apply for permanent residency under the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143), which is the second step in this pathway.
Eligibility for both (Stage 2)
The eligibility requirements for the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143) are generally the same as those in Stage 1, for both the applicant (parent) and the sponsor (child).
However, at this stage, the sponsor must provide an Assurance of Support (AoS).
An Assurance of Support is a financial undertaking that assures the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) that the parent will not rely on government assistance after being granted the permanent visa.
The DHA will request the AoS after the Stage 2 visa application is lodged.
More Information (Stage 2)
For applicants who already hold a Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 173), the DHA fee for the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143) is $19,865.
An initial payment of $445 is due at lodgement, with the remaining balance payable before grant, and only if the visa will be granted.
Additional family members included in the application will incur extra DHA fees.
If the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143) is granted, the parent is a Permanent Resident of Australia and will be able to remain indefinitely. The parent will be able to live, work and study with no restrictions, and can travel overseas if they wish.
Balance of Family Test
The Balance of Family Test is a key eligibility requirement for permanent Parent Visas in Australia.
It is designed to ensure that a parent has a close family connection to Australia.
To meet this test, at least half of the parent’s children must be Australian citizens, permanent residents, or eligible New Zealand citizens, or more of the parent’s children must be living permanently in Australia than in any other single country (with some caveats).
This requirement ensures migration opportunities are prioritised for families with strong ties to Australia.
Please note: The criteria listed above (for both the 1st stage and the 2nd stage) represent the minimum requirements only.
